SENATOR TAITAGUE VISITS GUMA SAN JOSE, CELEBRATES SHELTER’S MISSION TO SERVE STRUGGLING FAMILIES
New homeless shelter provides hope for children and their families

Senator Telo T. Taitague took a moment to visit with families and staff at the new Guma San Jose homeless shelter in Dededo this week. Catholic Social Services, which operates the facility, held a grand opening celebration on April 27, 2010.

“Reaching out to lend a helping hand to those families who are struggling financially is perhaps one of the greatest qualities of our community,” Senator Taitague said. “I’m proud to support Guma San Jose’s mission to provide women and their children with the services, shelter and support they need to re-establish themselves and earn a decent living for their families.”

Currently Guma San Jose is the only homeless shelter that can accommodate children and their families who are not victims of violence or abuse. The facility is capable of housing up to ten families with accommodations for single occupants.

KEEPING UP WITH THE BUILDUP:
Senator Taitague Attends Groundbreaking Ceremony for Workforce Facility Designed to Accommodate 18,000 Workers

As preparations for the U.S. Department of Defense’s expected military buildup on Guam move forward, Senator Telo T. Taitague continues to keep abreast of current issues and concerns while remaining a staunch proponent for mutually beneficial initiatives and open communication with the general public.

“A groundbreaking ceremony for a facility to house 18,000 construction workers clearly indicates that today, despite public opinion, the buildup is moving forward. “ Senator Taitague said. “This is the most significant event in Guam’s history since World War II and it is our responsibility to work together to guide this process in the best interest of our people.”

Senator Taitague joined Younex International during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ukudu Workforce Village in Harmon. The facility is being constructed to house the anticipated18,000 laborers needed to build the required infrastructure within the DOD timeframe.

“There is a very heated debate that spans all cultures and ages on Guam, especially among our younger professionals, students and our youth. I’m proud to say that our people are informed with well researched arguments both for and against an increased military presence,” Senator Taitague said. “But the challenge for today’s leader goes beyond distinguishing what side we are on. We must realize that this buildup already is affecting this community, whether they are new businesses in Tumon or dissenting voice among the constituents we serve. We’ve got to think about the dynamics of the events we see happening now and we’ve got to establish a vision that will secure a greater quality of life for our children and future."

SENATOR TAITAGUE CELEBRATES OPENING OF GUAM CANCER CENTER

Cancer patients to receive treatment on island

Senator Telo Taiatgue recently joined doctors and technicians during the opening of the Guam Cancer Center, celebrating a critical milestone in Guam’s healthcare industry.

“This life-threatening disease has affected so many lives in our community. From the those afflicted with cancer to the friends, families and loved ones who rally behind them with spiritual and financial support,” Senator Taitague said. “So many of our families face these heartbreaking situations every day and though we are fortunate to have the support of our extended families and close friends, we’ve got to take a closer look at strengthening our capabilities and treatment facilities here on Guam.”

Senator Taitague took special interest in this opening celebration as her mother, Mrs. Annie Taitague, succumbed to cancer in 1998.

"Being surrounded by the support and love from family and friends while fighting cancer has a significant impact on the emotional, spiritual and even physical well being of patients," Senator Taitague said. "I remember clearly, how difficult it was for my mother, who died of cancer in 1998, to be away from home while she underwent treatment. Being forced to seek medical treatment off-island is a heavy burden for patients and their families, especially as they must endure the daunting challenges of this life-threatening disease.

INARAJAN RESIDENTS SUPPORT SENATOR TAITGUE’S HOST COMMUNITY LEGISLATION
Initiative aims to bring financial support to village's forced to accommodate solid waste facilities

Senator Telo Taitague and Senator Ben Pangelinan held a public hearing in the village of Inarajan to allow residents in the area to support Bill No. 303.

This measure, if passed, would provide $150,000 in financial compensation to the village for hosting the Layon Landfill and $100,000 to the village of Ordot-Chalan Pago. The funding would come from a nominal premium added to user tipping fees.

A number of residents came out to testify in support of the Bill, including Mayors Franklin Taiatague of Inarajan and Jesse Gogue of Ordot-Chalan Pago. The leaders touted the Senator’s initiative and look forward to passage of this public law.
